Effects of condensation on your ductwork

Condensation can cause all sorts of problems, from leaks to mold infestation. Here’s why you should not leave the first sign of excessive condensation unaddressed...

Excessive moisture in your crawl space due to condensation is an issue that can quickly go out of control. In order to understand why you have condensation on ductwork, you first need to understand how. There is water all around us. Water is even in the air we breathe in the form of water vapor. Humidity is a measure of how much moisture is in the air. However, air can only hold a limited amount of water and warmer air is able to hold more than cooler air. Condensation is the process by which water vapor in the air is changed into liquid water. A typical vented crawl space will allow warm moist air into it during the hot summer months. When this air makes contact with the chilled ductwork, water droplets form just like on the outside of a glass of cold soda. As such, the only way that water can condense on your ductwork is if one of two conditions exists:

  • •  If you don’t have adequate insulation on your ductwork
  • •  If there is excessive moisture in the air.

Insulation works because it is very inefficient at transferring heat. With proper duct insulation, moist warm air will not come into contact with the cool air conditioning ductwork. This prevents condensation from forming. Excessive moisture also helps contribute to duct condensation issues. The greater the humidity level, the more likely you are to have condensation issues. The long term effects of condensation results in mold, insect infestation and structural damage. Controlling the humidity inside of the crawl space is definitely a step towards making your home environment healthier. Some solutions are a properly installed vapor barrier, cross ventilation, dehumidifier installation and encapsulation of the crawl space.
